Dear Kare,

I can give you a little clue about 'pariyodapana.m'.

It is derived from the word 'pariyodapeti' [pari + ava + daa + aape]. The meanings are: to cleanse; to purify.

Pariyodapanaa is a female is a female noun meaning purification.

This word is not derived from dama.

Please see Concise Pali-English Dictionary by A. P. Buddhadatta Mahaathera.

It is better to consult a Pali-English Dictionary rather than a Sanskrit-English dictionary when looking for the meaning of Pali words, I think. It is well-known that the Buddha redefined the meaning of many Sanskrit words.

Hope this might help you to clarify the meaning.

With metta,

D. G. D. C. Wijeratna

Dear Kare,

Thanks for the help.

I was wondering which term in pali you mean by cleanse, is it dapa.

I found one equivalent in sanskrit as dam, meaning according to More
Williams Sanskrit-English dic, to tame, to subdue, to tranquilize, to
conquer etc.

It seems that there is a distinction in the term when in Sanskrit and in
pali.

Thanks again,

Yours,

Gabriel

Dhammapada v. 183:

Sabbapaapassa akara.na.m, ~ kusalassa upasampadaa,
Sacittapariyodapa. na.m - ~ eta.m Buddhaana' saasana.m.

To avoid all evil, to cultivate good, and to cleanse one's mind - this is
the teaching of the Awakened Ones.
