I do not know any online material, sorry. But you will find some of the
informations you are looking for in Rhys Davids' introduction to
Mahaparinibbanasutta in the Pali Text Society's translation of Digha
Nikaya. You might also want to see what Dipak Kumar Barua has to say about
the sutta in his "An Analytical Study of the Four Nikayas", Munshiram
Manoharlal Publishers, and also Govind Chandra Apte in his "Studies in the
Origins of Buddhism", Motilal Banarsidass. I suppose Motilal Banarsidass
will be able to provide both of these books if you ask them. Pande's book
is from 1957 and Barua's book is from 1971, so there will probably be more
recent research to be found somewhere as well, but these should at least be
able to give you some basic info.
