Pali Friends,

Those interested in the history of Buddhism would be happy to know
that Ajahn Sujato (Australia), a forest
monk of Ajahn Chah's lineage, has written an excellent and refreshing
account of how the early Buddhist
schools were formed.

Sujato disagrees with

In his Supplementary paper on "Chronology" he rejects Cousins and
Gombrich's proposal that the Second
Council is 60-80 After the Nirvana. It would be interesting to hear from Lance.

Also do not miss reading the Supplementary articles are very
interesting in themselves. I especially like his
Supplementary article on "A higher criticism of archaeology" which is
an answer to Schopen and his "deeply
programmatic attempt to undermine the findings of Buddhist textual studies".

Happy reading,

Piya Tan
