Pubbe is both `former' and the eastern direction.
You see, there is the picture of an Indian sage, an Issi,
(Skt. R(i)shi)Watching the sunrise, probably bathing the whites of
his eyes in the early golden sun rays.
There is implied the vasatu idea, something like the Chinese `feng
chui' the yoga of locations and directions'

Dakkhina is both 'the south' and `the right side'
Uttara `north and `left',
Pachima 'west', naturally is the sun set, and also `later'.
`The end' as in `Pachima kale' – the end (of one's days).

The four directions, seems to me, are even more significant,
As the mental constituents `Nama Khanda' - embodied in brain.

East is the front lobes, intentions, plans, etc. – Sankhara Khanda,
the tangible past.

West is Vinnana, as the posterior lobes are connected with the senses.

The affective, dreamy, south is Vedana, the left side, crosswise
connected with the right brain hemisphere,
It denotes the attitude of Samatha, calmness, health,
Somatic capabilities,
At it's height it is `Ceto Vimutti', `mind over matter`
– a truly powerful mind.

Uttara, as the Superior, logical attitude of the right
(left hemisphere) Is Sanna, the recognition of facts,
reality, 'the `Normal Mind' that harbors transcendental wisdom –
Vipassana Nana.
