According to Bhante Sangharakshita, He says, 'Pali is not the name of a language at all. The word means, literally, 'a line, a row (of letters)' and thus, by extension of its meaning, 'the (canonical) text'.

It is not clear when this Pali and Magadhi have become synonymous. Its interesting to know, though Buddha born among the Sakyas, which comes under the kingdom of Kosala, He spent much time after his enlightenment in Magadh. So language of Magadh or Magadhi was his normal means of communication.

When in Kosala, he might have used different language.
