Re: European-language cognates?

Dear Adin,

If you are looking for cognates in other Indo-European
languages and Pali and have some knowledge of or
access to Sanskrit, I might suggest that you compare
the Sanskrit equivalent of a particular Pali word and
then trace possible Pali cognates through the Sanskrit
equivalent word, because there has been a considerable
amount of work already done with cognates in Sanskrit
and other Indo-European languages. However, there does
not appear to be a great deal of work done for Pali in
this same area. Keep in mind that there is a
difference between a derived word in another
Indo-European language and a direct cognate. Good luck
with your research.

Best,

Geoff Morrison
