I'm out on a limb here, but perhaps something along the lines of (in English) 'which has a third (part) that is only half'. The first two 'parts' are implied, so altogether the two parts, and the half of a third part add up to 2 1/2.

My first thought was to see it as a bahubbiihi and try something like:

yassa teyyo a.d.dho, so a.d.dhateyyo.

This doesn't strike me as entirely satisfactory, but I can't quite put my finger on the problem. Maybe it's a niccasamaasa.

Compare a.d.dha-navama (8 1/2), a.d.dha-ccha.t.tha (5 1/2). The numerals in the second half are ordinals.

I would greatly appreciate being corrected if this is wrong.

best regards,
