One alternative would be to put some time into learning the Sinhalese or Thai scripts. Of the two, Thai is easier, but Sinhalese is more beautiful IMO. It should be possible to order a complete tipitaka from one of those countries for far less than the PTS edition would cost.

Otherwise, keep an eye out at online used-book sites that let you order direct from used bookstores natinwide (and internationally). For example http://www.abebooks.com/
