The Visuddhimagga deals rather extensively with the
dhutangas. If I have understood Buddhaghosa correctly,
wearing a specially simple kind of robe is i dhutanga
practice, and so is possessing only one set; but even
bhikkhus who don't practice the dhutangas have to wear
the robe. Is that correct?

The scope of this group includes "Pali translation
theory and practice", so the question of which English
word to elect for a certain Pali one, or how the
stylistic level of the translation should correspond
to that of the source text, is not irrelevant; neither
is comparisons to translation practice outside the
Pali fold. Pali translation theory is to a large
extent identical with general translation theory, and
the English found in translations made from Pali
should not be too different from the English used by
Non-Buddhists. (I don't think Pali, when the Tipitaka
was edited, was too different from other Prakrits.)

My letter dealt with language, not with your person or
tradition.
