thanks, Nina.

For akusalaadhammaa, you seems to suggest the term refers to
unwholesome actions. I was thinking if that is the case, the Buddha
would say akusalaakammaa instead. But, I also recall our discussion
on Dhammapada verses 1 and 2 not long ago, where we have something
very similar. I wonder what the PTS has for dhammaa, and what others
think.

For bhiyyobhaavaaya vepullaaya sa.mvattanti,

bhiyyobhaava (adj) getting more, increase, multiplication.
vepulla (n) abundance, plenty.

"lead to 'abundant growth and increase'" is good, but I am thinking
of "lead to abundance exuberantly".

For the reverse (kusalaadhammaa), we can have "lead to full
development progressively". What do you think?

N: Personally I do not take much to states, although dhammas are
often translated as states. I am thinking of akusala committed
through body, speech and mind, and also of akusala citta and the
accompanying cetasikas.
There is a great diversity of akusala and of kusala.
Mental states suggest to me only thoughts and this is too narrow.

N: It means abundance or plenty. The English in PTS has more-becoming
and increase which sounds rather archaic.
We should think of a strong expression here.
What about abundant growth and increase? This can be for akusala
dhammas.
For kusala dhammas we can say: abundance and full development.
I would use the word development rather for kusala dhammas.
