Dear friends,

I'm making a new bigger better chanting book for our monastery, I found this
nice udana I think I might like to use. There are some verses, and some
stanzas which are not in verse but I suspect are supposed to be. Here they
are:

10. Lokasuttaṃ

30. Evaṃ me sutaṃ– ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā uruvelāyaṃ viharati
najjā nerañjarāya tīre bodhirukkhamūle paṭhamābhisambuddho.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā sattāhaṃ ekapallaṅkena nisinno hoti
vimutti-sukha-paṭisaṃvedī.

Atha kho bhagavā tassa sattāhassa accayena tamhā samādhimhā
vuṭṭhahitvā Buddha-cakkhunā lokaṃ volokesi. Addasā kho bhagavā
Buddha-cakkhunā volokento satte anekehi santāpehi santappamāne,
anekehi ca pariḷāhehi pariḍayhamāne, rāgajehipi

dosajehipi mohajehipi.

Atha kho bhagavā etam-atthaṃ viditvā tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imaṃ udānaṃ udānesi–

ayaṃ loko santāpajāto,

phassapareto rogaṃ vadati
attato; yena
yena hi maññati, tato taṃ hoti aññathā.

aññathābhāvī bhavasatto loko,

bhavapareto bhavamevābhinandati;

yad-abhinandati taṃ bhayaṃ, yassa bhāyati taṃ
dukkhaṃ;

bhava-vippahānāya kho pan-idaṃ brahmacariyaṃ vussati".

*This is the part I suspect is supposed to be verse, I've rearranged the
lines so it looks like verse but the metre is so irregular its hardly a
metre. Any suggestions? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?*

*End of re-versifying attempt.** (This is where the text turns back to verse
in the CSCD, but I notice in John Ireland's trs. he puts the previous three
stanzas in verse, which is why I first wondered if the other stanzas above
were once verse.)*

"Sabbaso taṇhānaṃ khayā, asesavirāganirodho nibbānaṃ;

tassa nibbutassa bhikkhuno, anupādā punabbhavo na hoti.

Abhibhūto māro vijitasaṅgāmo, upaccagā sabbabhavāni tādī"ti.

dasamaṃ;

Nandavaggo tatiyo niṭṭhito.
