thanks. It makes more sense now. A couple of points to highlight
about "people who followed the vedas" is that

(a) only people from certain castes CAN study the vedas;
(b) people from the lower castes, for example the Sudas, are
condemned and have no choice but to follow the social system depicted
in the vedas;
(c) even if a Suda study the vedas, it means nothing since it is not
his priviledge.

The Buddha denounced the caste system and offered an alternative
social view to the Indians.
