Gunnar,

I suppose there are overlaps between Pali and English (as between any other two languages). We need not be straight-jacketed about it. Clear sense and beauty are two important ingredients for the written teaching.

Often I tell my Sutta classes that they should tape (record) the suttas if they find too many peyyalas, but such passages are vital if one were to take the suttas to be more than mere academic exercises. They are meant to be heard: I am of the growing conviction that the beginning of awakening lies in our patience with the peyyalas seeing them in the context of the whole sutta and the teaching.

The operative word is "listening".

As regards sequence of senses, it depends on the language's idiom. Language is as idiosyncratic as the people who use them.

May more people see the joy of Pali and beyond.
