Dear Keren,

D 3 means Digha Nikaya Sutta no 3.
You can locate this sutta (Ambattha Sutta) in "The Long Discourses of the Buddha" (tr Maurice Walshe)

M 56 means Majjhima Nikaya Sutta no 56
You can locate this (Upali Sutta) in "The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha" (tr Nanamoli & Bodhi)

In fact, you can find both translation by another person (Thanissaro) in http://www.accesstoinsight.org

Look up both versions (or more) until you have a good idea what the passages are about.

The best way is of course learning Pali, which give you direct access of the meaning of these wonderful ancient texts.

Sukhi [be happy]

Piya
