Hello all,

Here is the next translated and grammatically analyzed sutta(Sn
XII.2). It is quite long, but there is a great deal of repetition
and, as opposed to last week, this will be the only sutta I post
today. This sutta also deals with dependent co-origination, but
clarifies what each aspect of the chain of events is composed of. So,
we find out exactly what "feeling" is, etc.

I have tried to make all the changes in this sutta that I decided upon
for the previous two (Sn XII.1 and .3) with the help of Nina. I may
have missed something here and there due to the length of the sutta,
but I have spent many hours on it, so I hope that the errors will be
minimal.

Please (anyone) if you have any questions or comments about this
sutta, let me know via the group.

This sutta was translated and analyzed by me alone just as the
previous two were from and the source was the CSCD.

Next Saturday we will be looking at another long sutta that was a
joint effort between Ven. Phra Noah Yuttadhammo and myself. Yong Peng
wondered if Bhante might stop by to discuss the translations that he
has done, but he has informed me that he will not. He is apparently
quite busy and is happy enough with his translations to not feel like
spending all the extra time discussing them. However, we can still
discuss various choices amongst ourselves as I will take notes for the
future, should I want to redo any sutta for one of my own works.
Thus, despite the fact that Ven. Yuttadhammo will not be here, I hope
that we can discuss the suttas just as fully as normal.

Again, however, this current sutta was done only by me, and so all the
changes will end up on my website along with the other finished
suttas. Additionally, at some point you will start to see suttas done
only by myself again. I have started with SN XII.18 to work on some
suttas by myself in addition to doing the analysis of the translations
that Ven. Yuttadhammo is doing. I will be sure to let you know which
suttas are which.

"Sutta of Analysis [of Dependent Origination]:"


The Buddha was dwelling at Saavatthi-


"Bhikkhus, I will teach Dependent Origination

Listen and reflect well as I speak."

"Yes sir." The bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One.

The Blessed One said this:


"And what, Bhikkhus, is `dependent co-origination?'


With ignorance as condition, bhikkhus, kammic formations arise. With
kammic formations as conditions, consciousness arises.

With consciousness as condition, materiality and mentality arise. With
materiality and mentality as condition, the six sense-bases arise.

With the six sense bases as condition, sense contact arises. With
sense contact as condition, feeling arises.

With feeling as condition, craving arises. With craving as condition,
clinging arises.

With clinging as condition, becoming arises. With becoming as
condition, birth arises.

With birth as condition, aging, dying, sorrow, lamentation, physical
and mental distress and tribulations all arise.

Thus, this is the origin of this whole mass of suffering


And what, bhikkhus, is `aging and death?'


Whatever is the aging of living beings in all classes of living
beings: their old age, broken teeth, gray hair, wrinkled skin,
decreasing vitality, decay of mental faculties.

This is called `aging.'

Whatever is the passing away of beings from all classes of living
beings, their deterioration, falling apart, disappearance, the dying
process, death, the break up of the aggregates, the falling away of
the corpse,

This is called `death.'

Thus, all of this aging and dying, this is called `aging and dying.'"


"And what, bhikkhus, is `birth?'


Whatever is the birth of beings of all the classes of living beings,
their conception, appearance in the womb, rebirth, re-becoming, the
manifestation of the aggregates, the acquiring of the sense bases.

This, bhikkhus, is called `birth.'"


"And what, bhikkhus, is `becoming?'


There are, bhikkhus, three types of becoming:
Becoming of the sense-realm
Becoming of the material-realm
Becoming of the formless-realm
This, bhikkhus, is called `becoming.'"


"And what, bhikkhus, is `clinging?'


There are, bhikkhus, four kinds of clinging:
Clinging to sense-pleasures
Clinging to speculative thought
Clinging to belief in rules and rituals
Clinging to the doctrine of having a soul
This, bhikkhus, is called clinging."


"And what, bhikkhus, is `craving?'


There are, bhikkhus, six classifications of craving:
Craving for physicality
Craving for sounds
Craving for scents
Craving for tastes
Craving for touch
Craving for thoughts and ideas.
This, bhikkhus, is called `craving.'"


"And what, bhikkhus, is `feeling?'


"There are, bhikkhus, six classifications of feeling:
There is feeling which has arisen from eye-contact, ear-contact,
nose-contact, tongue-contact, body-contact, and mind-contact.
"This, bhikkhus, is called feeling."


"And what, bhikkhus, is sense contact?"

There is eye-contact, ear-contact, nose-contact, tongue-contact,
body-contact, and mind-contact.
"This, bhikkhus, is called sense contact."


"And what, bhikkhus, are the six sense bases?"

The eye sense base, the ear sense base, the nose sense base, the
tongue sense base, the body sense base, the mind sense base.
"These, bhikkhus, are the six sense bases."


"And what, bhikkhus, is `mentality and materiality?'"

"Experience, perception, intention, sense contact, attention;"
"This is called `mentality.'"


"And the four great elements and the form derived from the four great
elements"
"This is called `materiality.'"


"Thus, this `mentality' and this `materiality' together, are called,
bhikkhus, `mentality and materiality"


"And what, bhikkhus, is consciousness?"


"There are six classes of consciousness:
There is eye-consciousness, ear-consciousness, nose-consciousness,
tongue-consciousness, body-consciousness, and mind-consciousness."
"These, bhikkhus, are called consciousness."


"And what, bhikkhus, are kammic formations?"

"There are, bhikkhus, three types of kammic formations:
Kammic formations of the body
Kammic formations of the speech
Kammic formations of the mind"
"These, bhikkhus, are called kammic formations."


"And what, bhikkhus, is ignorance?"

"Monks, whatever is ignorance of unsatisfactoriness, of the origin of
unsatisfactoriness, of the cessation of unsatisfactoriness, and of the
path leading to the cessation of unsatisfactoriness."
"This, bhikkhus, is called ignorance."


Thus indeed, bhikkhus, with ignorance as condition, kammic formations
arise. With kammic formations as conditions, consciousness arises.

With consciousness as condition, materiality and mentality arise. With
materiality and mentality as condition, the six sense-bases arise.

With the six sense bases as condition, sense contact arises. With
sense contact as condition, feeling arises.

With feeling as condition, craving arises. With craving as
condition, clinging arises.

With clinging as condition, becoming arises. With becoming as
condition, birth arises.

With birth as condition, aging, dying, sorrow, lamentation, physical
and mental distress and tribulations all arise.

Thus, this is the origin of this whole mass of suffering

And indeed, with the complete cessation of ignorance, there is the
cessation of kammic formations

With the cessation of kammic formations comes the cessation of
consciousness ceases.

With the cessation of consciouness comes the cessation of body and mind.

With the cessation of body and mind comes the cessation of the six
sense bases.

With the cessation of the six sense bases, comes the cessation of
sense contact.

With the cessation of sense contact, comes the cessation of experience
ceases.

With the cessation of experience, comes the cessation of craving.

With the cessation of craving, comes the cessation of clinging.

With the cessation of clinging, comes the cessation of sentient existence.

With the cessation of sentient existence, comes the cessation of birth.

With the cessation of birth cease aging and dying, sorrow,
lamentation, physical and mental distress and tribulations.

Thus, there is the cessation of this whole mass of suffering"
