It is exactly people which I think satasahassa.m (one hundred
thousand) refers to. I don't think the monks are distributing money
just because they are upset with the food offered. Please correct me
if I am wrong.

To my ear 'dismissed' wouldn't work, since you can only dismiss (in
the sense of 'send away') a _person_ in English, not other things
like money, letters, messages or the like. (in the sense of 'reject'
you can also dismiss a theory, opinion or report)

I think I remember seeing the word in the Udenavatthu in Dhp-a
referring to a bird spreading its wings. However I suspect it's
fairly rare in Pali. I'd probably just go with something simple that
fits the context and is plausible like 'spent', 'given', 'given
away', 'donated' or 'distributed', and maybe leave a note in the
margin that this is a word to look more closely at later.
