Dear all,
There is a new high quality, free, and completely legal (i.e., not
``borrowed'' or ``forged'' from a copyrighted typeface) Truetype Pali
font called URW Palladio Pali available at
http://www.sanskritweb.net/fonts/papali.pdf
http://www.sanskritweb.net/fonts/papali.zip
Papali.zip contains the finished font in all 4 styles. Papali.pdf
contains the documentation.
The expert fontdesigner Ulrich Stiehl has been so kind to create this
font for the Buddhist Publication Society. It has all English, French,
and German characters, besides the transliteration characters needed for
Pali, Classical Sanskrit and Sinhala. The font is in the nice Palladio
typeface which is somewhat similar to Palatino.
If anyone thinks that it would be good to let Stiehl design a Palladio
Pali Unicode font then let me know and I will try to ask him to do it. I
don't know how much work is involved and don't want to trouble him
unless there is considerable interest. It could be based on the TTF font
or on the 1252 character code so that it would include also all the
Scandinavian characters and the Spanish and Italian characters.
The Palatino Linotype typeface which has been used for creating Palatino
CSX+, etc, is fully copyrighted by Linotype in Germany and as far as I
understand from the font-info Linotype doesn't allow the Palatino font
to be changed and distributed without their permission. I am trying to
find out what the situation is regarding the fonts Times CSX+, Norman,
and Normyn, which are ``derived'' from Times New Roman which has been
copyrighted by Monotype. The copyright situation regarding fonts still
seems to be a gray area as even major companies are copying and forging
each other's fonts and there are even second degree ``forgeries''
around. It might well be that Linotype is not the original copyright
holder of Palatino and Monotype not the copyrightholder of Times as they
both sell fonts which supposedly have been forged by them. For example
the Arial typeface of Monotype is a forgery of Helvetica according to
Stiehl. See the Font Forging Industry webpage on www.sanskritweb.
If anyone needs the Autohotkey typing script for this new Palladio Pali
font then please let me know.
Mettaya,
Bh. Nyanatusita
