Dear Yong Peng & friends,

My reply is with everyone in mind.

We do not yet have an ISO for Buddhist terminology. Basically we are all on our own,
dictated perhaps only by the thesis board or our professors whose conventions we have
but to follow.

As many renowned scholars have said before and will say (and I am only passing this
on): be consistent. Adopt one system which works for your, keep a convention list
you use and stick to it.

Anyway, with people like John Bullitt, John Kelly and others, we are laying the
groundworks for some sort of ISO for Buddhist terminology, although knowing Buddhist
individualism, this may take some time. So let's wait patiently.

Let's count our blessings:
The CPD started a few years before I was born (I am 56) has now past the letter K.
The PTS Concordance, the publishers declare, has become obsolete on account of the
digital canon, which provides more effective searches. (But I still find the hard
printed word more comfortable and easier on the eye.)
Three of the Nikayas are finally translated with notes by Buddhist practitioners: may
the annotated and cross-referenced Anguttara translation appear within my sane
lifetime.
The Encyclopaedia of Buddhism is nearing completion, the Sri Lankan authorities tell
us. This is another ancient project: if only more erudite Sinhalese help here instead
of planning hate programmes against the Tamils. (Note: There are many good practising
Sinhalese monks.)

So despite the clouds, we have brilliant lights shining through, and we know the sun
shining brightly behind them.

Always smile he Buddha smile when replying emails :) If not, wait till you can,
before replying.

Please don't reply this email (I love this ending: Yong Peng should have thought of
this earlier.)
