Dear Yong Peng,
I also see another meaning in this sutta. As in so many suttas the Buddha
speaks about the different sense-doors separately. He shows: one is only
obseesed by visible object appearing through the eyes, sound appearing
through the ears, etc. I see this message in the sutta: if the doors are
guarded by mindfulness of one object at a time, there is no obsession. One
is like Raahula who had to become like the earth.
I have no other suggestion as to the translation, "persists in
overwhelming".
