Dear All,

As I'll be off in a few days to spend a week in Toronto, I don't have much
time left to contribute to the discussion about proposed changes to the
list. My suggestion is to leave the list as it is -- a Pali gateway for the
general public -- and to have more specialized lists (sublists) that focus
on specific topics. I started a Pali discussion list back in Feb. 2001 just
a few months before Yong Peng launched his. It was more or less a general
Pali list but after discussing traditional Pali grammars with Teng Kee on
YP's list, I decided to change the focus of my list to a more specialized
one for the study of Pali texts that deal exclusively with linguistic
matters such as Kaccaayana's grammar or any of the orher classical texts
listed in the philology section of the CPD bibliography. The current focus
is on the Saddatthabhedacintaa and its diipanii thanks to the contributions
of Ven. Dhammanando. One problem though is that it is difficult to focus on
more than one text at a time. It seems like you need a separate study list
for each text.

My list is open to anyone interested but you have to contact me by email to
get subscribed. The list has about 34 members. It has only had one
inflammatory eruption so far and that was on an off-topic issue over the US
bombing of Laos (9 years, 3 million tonnes of bombs, 3.2 million dead
Laotians). I treat my palistudy list as belonging to the Mahaavihaaravaasin
school (pro-Tipitaka, pro-commentarial).

Best wishes,
Jim Anderson
