Dear avuso,
I can appreciate your concern. What is at stake?
If we must choose to believe in only ONE set of Buddhist scriptures, I'd recommend the Pali Suttas and Vinaya. If we must choose to believe in only ONE set of spiritual beliefs, I'd recommend Theravada Buddhism.
I'm glad to have met Theravada Buddhism and it's scriptures. They have made my life much more meaningful.
However, I found out later that it is actually not Theravada Buddhism nor it's scriptures that has led me to a better life. Rather, it is the Dhamma that is presented through them, through teachers, through books and most deeply through the practice.
Suppose someone gives you a fruit to eat. You're hungry and it suits you. But before eating it, you find that it is partly bad. What would you do?
Would you throw away the whole fruit? Or would you eat the whole thing anyway?
