Dear asuvo,
I think we need to consider the scriptures by their own merit. Overall, I still have faith that the Pali Canon (minus the Abhidhamma) is the best we have as a complete, codified set of Buddhist scriptures. It is probably the closest scriptural source to the Buddha's teachings, but to assume that everything in there is pure is kind of silly to me now.
Anyway, this is but my current view. I would gladly drop it should there by substantial evidence to prove otherwise.
As for the Mahavihara Commentaries, it getting harder and harder for me to take them seriously. I think I can do well without their "help".
