This is a good example, Robert. Ven. Maha Kaccana was commenting on the earlier part of what the Buddha said, i.e., "with regard to the cause whereby the perceptions & categories of complication assail a person". He went through different kinds of perception in regards to different sense doors.

As for the later part of what the Buddha said: "That is the end of taking up rods & bladed weapons, of arguments, quarrels, disputes, accusations, divisive tale-bearing, & false speech.", it does seem (as you said) "simple enough and straightforward". No wonder the venerable did not comment on it.
