In English, in the sentence "we are but your nephews", the "but"
changes its meaning to something like "just, only", that is "we are
only your nephews". I very much doubt that the Pali "pana" is
carrying that same meaning. Hence I would render the first sentence as:
But, uncle, we are your nephews.
This fits better with the 2nd sentence too.
