Dear Ven. Sujato, Janaka and friends,
Janaka, what you are trying to do is very interesting. I have
actually done something similar quite time back for the Majjhima
Nikaya. I have to inform you it is only a few loose sheets of paper
with handwritten notes. I can send you a copy if you are keen.
[Please email me your address offlist] There is also a Yahoo! sutta
group, from which you may be able to gather some information.
Then there are summaries or introductions to the suttas in most of
the modern English translations. And there are also publications
giving overview of the whole or part of the Tipitaka. For example,

Out of curiosity, may I ask what you intend to use for your database
application. By the way, if you need some webspace, I may be able to
offer you some on Tipitaka.net.
metta,
Yong Peng.

I am software developer from Sri Lanka I have started a tipitaka
database work as a "Dana" to give freely for anyone who is studding
dhamma I know this is a big work I may have to work for the whole
life to complete this.
If anyone can help me to create data please drop me an email. In my
first step I am digging inside to tipitaka and collecting the all
title of sutta, dhammapada, small parts,... where it organized and in
my next step I am collecting data for each part(sutta) following are
details.
