By oneself (only) is liberation won.

This is a very profound statement by Buddhism which challenges in the
face of all other religions before and after it. It is to deny the
notion that complete liberation can be achieved through any external
agent.

IMHO, on the contrary, transferring of merits has nothing to do with
liberation. In fact, all Buddhist branches encourage doing good deeds
in the name of others. However, no amount of merits can undo a
person's karma. So, I do think that some Buddhists are carrying this
practice a little too far. And from an socio-economic point of view,
it isn't doing any real good.
