The sort is trivial (for a single format). However,
I gave up on the spell-checker for lack of pali
knowledge (for example, an english spell
checker either needs an impossibly large list of word
variations or to understand that cat, cats, ox, oxen,
are acceptible, but caten and oxs are not).

That could be done. However, I find that the process
of looking definitions up makes them stick in the
memory (perhaps not desiring to look them up again).

That sounds like a neat project.
With guidance and material from Rett and Michael, I
am working on a little program for interacting with
the Kaccaayana series. This allows you to click on words
to see their definition, roots, etc in various formats,
Unicode diacritics, NCR, Harvard-Kyoto, Velthuis (and
something approaching Thai).
At the moment, the material is quite limited
(2 suttas, 100 words), but highly structured. I'd
be happy to give you the XML files. Or, you
can wait for the completion of Rett's first
Vaccaayana chapter.
