Dear Yong Peng,
I never thought that a wiki would/could substitute this mailing list (please keep it up, Yong :-) - this mailing list is much more like a discussion group and at least i would really miss it! -
a wiki could, on the other hand, supply information which does not have to be answered time and again in this mailing list, because the group came forward with a nice comprehensive answer/explanation once and for all - open for the browser based public...
i actually started on saturday with the pali-english dictionary inside the wikimedia-project because other open wikis are either limited in size or bandwith (like swiki etc.)
and secondly, because i personally consider an open continually enhanced pali-english dictionary to be a real blessing - copyrights would not matter and the articles could eventually become very comprehensive and hyperlinked... (after all the discussion we had lately about this delicate matter...PED included [Michel might remember my stripped PED.pdf which i hosted on nibbanam.com but had to withdraw it, because Chicago university did not want to distribute it in this way to the public...])
once i started there, i discovered, that wikipedia was already keeping a subdomain exclusively for pali: pi.wikipedia.org and pi.wiktionary.org ("pi" being the official language acronym for pali, which i did not know up to saturday)!!! This makes the decision obvious in my eyes. Its kind of an invitation :-). Again, there is no limit to the complexity or simplicity of this wiki... it all depends, as Yong Peng mentioned, on the amount of interest and participation...
So, you may want to drop by:

http://pi.wiktionary.org

Lennart

Dear Lennart, Clay, Dmytro, Dennis, Rett, Piya, Alex, Gunnar and
friends,
this mail is also a reply to Clay's message
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Pali/message/6148).
It is wonderful to see Lennart and Clay contributing to the online
Pali learning experience on wiktionary.org and everything2.com. It is
exciting to learn and see that happening. It'd be wonderful if more
can join them to provide relevant information on those sites.
I have long wanted to turn Tipitaka.net into a community site as far
back as 2003. However, I would like to keep this mailing list
running. I believe this would be useful for Nina and many other
members. So, this is quite a daunting task because my initial idea
was to stop the mailing list completely. After two more years of
continuation, I find that the mailing list is still very helpful.
Still, I believe we can extend our online activities to the web (i.e.
browser-based). So, I follow two basic guidelines on this issue. (1)
web activities will be an extension of mailing-list activities; (2)
minimise duplication of efforts elsewhere (be it online/print or
buddhist/others).
I like the idea of a wiki, as in a wikipedia or wiktionary, in which
people contribute information on a collaborative basis to a
collective system of thoughts. It is brilliant. For a start, I would
like to find out who is in favour of using an available Open Source
wiki (and which one), and who is in favour of developing a simpler
one for Tipitaka Network. I hope to hear from you soon.
metta,
Yong Peng.
