Pañcimaani, bhikkhave, maatugaamassa aave.nikaani
dukkhaani, yaani maatugaamo paccanubhoti, aññatreva
purisehi.
Monks, there are these five sufferings particular to a
woman that a woman undergoes, exclusive of men.

What are these five?
Idha, bhikkhave, maatugaamo daharova samaano
patikula.m gacchati, ñaatakehi vinaa hoti. Ida.m,
bhikkhave, maatugaamassa pa.thama.m aave.nika.m
dukkha.m, ya.m maatugaamo paccanubhoti, aññatreva
purisehi.
Here, monks, a woman while young in years goes to her
husbands family, and is without relatives. This,
monks, is the first suffering particular to a woman
that a woman undergoes, exclusive of men.
Puna ca para.m, bhikkhave, maatugaamo utunii hoti.
Ida.m, bhikkhave, maatugaamassa dutiya.m aave.nika.m
dukkha.m, ya.m maatugaamo paccanubhoti, aññatreva
purisehi.
Then again, monks, a woman menstruates. This, monks,
is the second suffering particular to a woman that a
woman undergoes, exclusive of men.
