Pañcimaani, bhikkhave, maatugaamassa aave.nikaani
dukkhaani, yaani maatugaamo paccanubhoti, aññatr’eva
purisehi.
Monks, there are these five sufferings particular to a
woman that a woman undergoes, exclusive of men.

What are these five?

Idha, bhikkhave, maatugaamo daharo’va samaano
patikula.m gacchati, ñaatakehi vinaa hoti. Ida.m,
bhikkhave, maatugaamassa pa.thama.m aave.nika.m
dukkha.m, ya.m maatugaamo paccanubhoti, aññatr’eva
purisehi.
Here, monks, a woman while young in years goes to her
husband’s family, and is without relatives. This,
monks, is the first suffering particular to a woman
that a woman undergoes, exclusive of men.

Puna ca para.m, bhikkhave, maatugaamo utunii hoti.
Ida.m, bhikkhave, maatugaamassa dutiya.m aave.nika.m
dukkha.m, ya.m maatugaamo paccanubhoti, aññatr’eva
purisehi.
Then again, monks, a woman menstruates. This, monks,
is the second suffering particular to a woman that a
woman undergoes, exclusive of men.
