Dear Nina,

Thank you for the help, especially on "upasampajja". I
followed a computer version of the CPED that took the word
from upasameti. The CPED also has "attain, enter". Now I
remember the familiar "enter and abide in", and it clears up
the strangeness of the passage.

I thought panassa was some kind of funny declension of an
indeclinable :) I'm used to Sanskrit where you can't just
make an "a" disappear :) Thanks again.

Best wishes,

Yuttadhammo

Venerable Bhante Yuttadhammo,
Thank you very much. I wish you a fruitful Pansa.

N: Doubt I think the best option. Expositor II, 345, also
uses perplexity.
Swaying between two: is it this, is it that. It concerns the
Buddha, the
Dhamma, the Sangha.
Bhante: 2) upasampajja = pacified
N: Upasampajjati: to attain, to enter. upasampajja
viharitu'm :PTS: enter
and abide, Thai has: banlu.
Bh: 3) kaama = sensuality
N: PTS has for kaamacchanda: sense desire. Kaama has
different meanings, see
at end.
Bh: 4) kho panassa = "moreover", though I am open to
suggestions as the
usage of
> "panassa" is strange to me
N: kho pana +assa. In your transl it came out all right :
for him
I like the Pali of this:<aadiinavo na yathaabhuuta'm
sammappaññaaya
sudi.t.tho hoti.> In the English transl. of the PTS one can
easily overlook
the essence. The Thai Co adds: he does not see clearly the
danger of vatthu
kaama (the basis of the sense desire: that which is desired,
the elevenfold
sense-sphere existence) and kilesa kaama (the defilement of
sense desire) as
it really is by jhaana and by pañña.
Respectfully,
Nina.
