I'm writing this at an Internet terminal in a brand
new congress hall in Beijing, during the 89th
Universal Congress of Esperanto, and just after the
official meeting of the Buddhist League of
Esperantists. Most participants in this meeting were
Mahayanists, as to be supposed: mostly from China,
Korea, Japan, Vietnam, and Nepal. But I was surprised
when a Korean friend, during the free discussion,
jumped up and expressed himself strongly in favour of
Pali studies, since the Pali texts are closest to the
original teaching. It seems there is a group in Korea
who shares the same view.
So I finished the meeting (as I happen to be the
president of the league) by reciting the
Kara.niiyamettasutta, first in Pali and then in my
Esperanto translation.

PS Mao is still on the bank-notes, but hardly anywhere
else.
