Thank you for "mu.t.thasacca" - I didn't know it came from sati + ya.



For "asaddhiya", "lack of assurance" is not favourable, because "assurance" has different meanings in different contexts, one of course being "certainty". "Lack of confidence" would be another choice, but I don't see the problem with "uncertainty", as it points to any sort of waivering of mind. I am not so sure that I would confine asaddhiya to doubt about the triple gem and the path, as these are removed at sotapanna. Here we have been talking about anaagaami and arahatta. A sotapanna can still be uncertain, though not about the triple gem. As you say, to reach anaagaami and arahatta, one must be completely certain, confident (i.e. that one will reach the respective paths and fruitions). I asked a Thai monk of level 8 Pali just now, and he said that "vicikicchaa" refers to ultimate realities, whereas "asaddhiya" can refer to people or concepts. The Thai Tipitaka (Chabaap Luang) says "mai mii saddhaa" - terribly helpful :)



It is all how you choose to translate it, I suppose - Nanamoli renders "vicikicchaa" as "uncertainty" in the Path of Purification, whereas I would translate it as "doubt" (about the triple gem, kamma, paticcasamuppaada, etc).

1) The grammer sometimes goes over my head - I took some Pali and a year of Sanskrit in University, but it has all gone rusty. Please let me know if there are any grammatical problems.
2) "sekha'm dhamma'm" gave some problem; "training Dhamma" seemed a close translation...
3) "siilaani" here is "moralities". Though I would prefer "moral virtues", I don't like to translate one word with two if not necessary. Nanamoli translates siila as simply "virtue", but I have argued that virtue is too broad - generosity is also a virtue, but not a siila, I don't think.
4) "neta'm .thaana'm vijjati" - lit. "This position is not found" - where "vijjati" has the meaning of "is not found" or "does not exist". In this context, I have rendered "na vijjati" here as "is unfounded", in order to fit the context. "Untenable" might be another choice.
5) "aapajjamaano" is rendered as "carrying out", but I am open to other suggestions.
