Dear Friends,

I am sorry if this pace is too fast, I hope others as well are keenly translating the texts - I am
going to try one sutta per day and would appreciate any comments on them. Maybe you don't want to
use these translations, but it is really helping me to learn Pali :)

This next one (AN 6.8.2 Arahattasutta'm) poses a challenge with the words "maana'm, omaana'm,
atimaana'm, adhimaana'm, thambha'm, atinipaata'm". The Commentary gives the following:

maananti jaati-aadiihi maññana'm.
omaananti hiinohamasmiiti maana'm.
atimaananti atikkamitvaa pavatta'm accu.n.natimaana'm.
adhimaananti adhigatamaana'm.
thambhanti kodhamaanehi thaddhabhaava'm.
atinipaatanti hiinassa hiinohamasmiiti maana'm.

The definitions I have given, based on the PED and CPED, are as follows:

maana'm - conceit
omaana'm - contempt
atimaana'm - arrogance
adhimaana'm - overestimation
thambha'm - obstinacy
atinipaata'm - condescension

the most difficult for me was "atinipaata'm", not in the PED or CPED, and seemingly not anywhere
else in the Tipitaka. Sister Upalavanna has "falling low" at www.metta.lk which is I suppose literal,
if not illuminating...

The PED has abhinipaata, with a seemingly dubious definition: "destroying, hurting (?)
at Vbh 321 is expld. by apatha--matta".

Vibhanga has abhinipaatamattaa paired with aapaatamattaa: "Aññatra abhinipaatamattaati
aññatra aapaatamattaa." I guessed "condescension", based on nipaata = "descent" (CPED),
but it also might be that there is another definition I don't have access to.

Indeed, these, oh monks, six dhammas not abandoning, one is unable to directly realise arahantship.
