The sam.ghaati is the bhikkhu's double robe or outer-cloak, and is one
of the essential requisites. A monk must not be separated from his three
robes at dawn. If he is living in a place where there are robbers he
can deposit it in a house for safe-keeping. In Thailand, the
forest-monks wear the double-robe together with the upper robe when
going for alms. Perhaps the practice used to be just to carry it with
one while on alms-round. It is too hot to wear all the three robes
while walking for alms, but that is what Thai forest monks do.
Accepting meat and fish is, of course, allowable for monks as long as
it is not the result of slaughtering an animal specifically to offer
alms to the monks. The Mahaayaanists tried to find fault.
Sesame oil is allowable, soothsaying and pharmacy are not, though one
can explain about medicines, without directly prescribing or preparing
it for lay people.
