ANGUTTARA NIKAYA- Book of the twos.11-TRANQUILITY AND INSIGHT

Two things O Monks, partake of supreme knowledge. What two ?
Tranquility and Insight.

If tranquility is developped , what profit does it bring ? The mind
becomes developed. And what is the profit of a developed mind ? All
lust is abandoned.

If insight is developed, what profit does it bring ? Wisdom becomes
developed . And what is the profit of developed wisdom ? All
ignorance is abandoned.

A mind defiled by lust is not freed; and a mind defiled by ignorance
cannot develop wisdom. Thus, O monks, through the fading away of
lust there is deliverence of mind ( to attain absorptions); and
through the fading away of ignorance there is deliverance by wisdom.
(to attain nibbana)

end of Sutta.

FYI there is a parallel discussion on exactly the same topic
currently running on Buddha-L - with the balance of opinion somewhat
tilted in favour of Jeff's views on dhyaana.

Best wishes,
