As we saw, the Co to this sutta referred to the Visuddhimagga for
anapanasati. This is the second tetrad, group of four, and now I shall post
in two parts what I wrote before on this subject.
Piiti is translated differently in different texts, rapture, enthusiasm,
happiness, but this does not matter. As was the case with vitakka and
vicara, different texts translate it differently, but I do not fall over
that. The main thing is to know what cetasika, what dhamma is referred to by
those words, so, we shall always need the Pali as well. The main things is
to know what characteristic and what function such or such cetasika, or
jhanafactor has.
<As one who experiences joy>. I also have seen in texts: experiencing joy.
Maybe it amounts to the same. The long ii at end pertains to a person who
has this quality.
cittasa'nkhaara = citta + sa'nkhaara : mental functions: this is more
difficult. We need the Visuddhimagga here: As to VI and VII, experiencing
mental formation, citta sankhara, and tranquillizing mental formation: the
Vis. VIII, 229, explains that mental formation pertains here to feeling and
perception, sanna. The feeling is associated with perception (Vis. VIII,
230). The Vis. quotes here from the Path of Discrimination: <perception and
feeling being cetasikas... , these things are bound up with citta and are
mind functions.>
N: Sankhaarakkhandha are all cetasikas except feeling and sa~n~naa, but in
this context it pertains to just feeling and perception. This tetrad
pertains to the second Application of Mindfulness, of feelings. Mental
functions is not wrong, but if we use mental formations we keep in mind
sankhaara.
I hope this will be clearer after I post on the subject.
