Bhikkhu

Hi All
I am trying to understand the etymology of the word "Bhikkhu".
I would think it is derived from "Bhikkhaa"(alms food), ie one who
beg's for alms(?). What would be the grammatical explanation for the
feminine Bhikkhaa becoming the masculine Bhikkhu? Am I on the right
track with this?
