Does anyone know the etymology of the Pali term "vetulla"/
"vetulya"? And who is the referenced group in the use of the term
"vetullavada" (c.f. Mahavamsa36,41; Dipavamsa 22, 45)?

In the navangas, does "vedalla" = Sanskrit "vaipulya"?

Is "vetulla" a playoff the the Skt "vaipulya" (as the PTS Pali-
English Dictionary seems to sugges)?

If so would the use of the term "vetullavada" be in reference to be
the earlier "followers" of "Mahayana" ?(According to Nakamura
Hajime, the vaipulya was an early epithet for the Mahayana
sutras)
