I remember reading an article a few years ago by Gombrich about this. I
don't have the details at hand, but it was in a large volume of conference
proceeding edited by Heinz Bechert. From memory, Gombrich traced the
sucession of teachers to a teacher at the third council at the time of
Asoka, he estimated the number of years between teachers and therefore
worked backwards to determined the dates of the Buddha. This was only one
paper of many, and there seemed to be no agreements between scholars on the
dates the Buddha lived.

Hi Paul and Dimitry,
seems very very odd to me, how one can relate that Rgveda passage to the
paticca samuppada (especially after having read Bhante Nyananandas
explanation in "Magic of the mind").
And what is Dr Gombrich talking about, when he says, that he "established
the dates of the Buddha" and no one taking notice?? Anyone have a clue?
Lennart
