Dear Nina, Jim, Dimitry and friends,

thanks. I agree with Dimitry that the -tva construct is more often an
absolutive than a gerund. In fact, I have not come across one as a
gerund in the true sense (in English) yet, but I guess we can freely
translate it into English with -ing endings.

The use of the gerund/absolutive with the infinitive may probably be
bad Pali, as Jim said. Or may be a rarely used method to combine two
sentences, in which case we need to look at the context of the
sentence, as Nina said. This sentence formation does not occur very
often after chapter 10 of Pali Primer.

I would like to further discuss this too, or at least keep it
outstanding until we have more findings.

metta,
Yong Peng
