Dear Lars,
In the Paticcasamuppada vinnana is given one nidana and nama only
applies to the other mental factors.
However at other times nama includes vinnana; . See for example
Visuddh. XIV 11: "in the third dyad when a man wants to begin
insight, his understanding of the defining of the FOUR immaterial
aggregates [i.e. vinnana, sankhara, vedana and sanna] is
understanding as defining of mentality (nama).....So it is of 2 kinds
as the defining of mentality(nama) and materiality (rupa).

I think this is a backward step by Bodhi. Take vedana , feeling: it
is occuring now. It is a mental element that can be experienced. Why
describe it as 'name' when it is simply that feeling element.
I think this is a case of looking at the linguistic root of a pali
term(which as regards 'nama' is related to name) but not seeing how
the texts use it to explain realities that arise here and now.
