Dear mn,

you may go to this webpage: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Pali/join
to change one of the settings to "Do not convert to HTML".

By doing so, you will only receive "textual" advertisement. Yahoo!
is a free service, and ads is their main source of income. So, there
is always some form of ads tagging along their products/services.

You will need a Yahoo! account to do that. And I strongly encourage
you to have one. It is free.

Another way, probably, is to configure Outlook Express such that it
will prompt you for password before establishing an internet
connection. This will also save you from making a call out.

If you are using an external modem, you can also switch it off when
you are not browsing the web.

Hope that helps.

metta,
Yong Peng

Yahoo advertising forces my computer to connect to the internet-and
very persistently. I have to disconnect manually 5-10 times for
each message.
