Dear Flavio,

Admittedly this is a difficult word to fully understand especially when one
has also to consider the other spelling 'opanayiko'. I think both are valid
forms though as they each have their own separate entries in Cone's A
Dictionary of Pali and CPD, and Buddhaghosa refers to both forms in his
commentary on the derivation and meaning of the word in Vism VII.83-4. Here,
I will only touch on 'opaneyyiko'. This is derived from upaneyya + the
taddhita affix -ika. upaneyya is a potential (or future) passive participle
derived from the prefix 'upa' + the root 'nii' (to lead, bring, draw) + ya
(a participle (kicca) affix). I think 'upaneyya' literally means 'to be led
or brought or drawn near' (the upa also presents a further problem as it
also can have other meanings besides 'near'). The taddhita affix -ika causes
the 'u' of 'upa' to change into 'o' (a vuddhi vowel) and gives the
additional meaning of 'deserving, worthy of' so we come up with 'deserving
to be brought or drawn near' or 'worthy of being brought or drawn near'.
Buddhaghosa seems to indicate that the affix could also be the null type
that has no effect on the meaning ie. 'opaneyyiko' just means 'upanetabbo'
or 'upaneyyo'. Many of the translations take this word in an active sense
which seems to be supported in Vism VII.84 but only with respect to the four
maggas. The CPD considers the meaning to be passive. There are also
specialized meanings given depending on whether the 4 paths, the 4 fruits,
or nibbaana are being reflected on. Anyway, this is only a start in my own
attempt to understand 'opaneyyiko'.

Best wishes,

Jim
