I think it's easier to see the change through the Sanskrit form:

bodhi + a.nga > bodhya.nga (Skt)

> bodhi > bojjha + a.nga > bojjha.nga (Pali)

The ancient manuals have the special terms and explain this process in
detail: I leave that to the etymologists.
