Is it a general rule that if a word ending in "dhi" is
followed by "a", that it becomes contracted to "jjha"?

I assume this rule results from the contraction being
easier to pronounce, like the modern equivalent of:
'sup? = wassup? = wattup? = "what is up [dude]?"
