In Theravada practice it is generally stated that permanent expulsion is the
rule but the Vinaya allows for non-expulsion - I will have to check the
references for you, but Shayne Clarke has done a lot of work on this issue -
you won't find it in the extant Pali Vinaya though as far as I know - try
the Mulasarvastivada for starters.
