AN INTRODUCTION TO BUDDHISM by Peter Harvey, 1990, Cambridge
University Press

and

THE FOUNDATIONS OF BUDDHISM by Rupert Gethin, 1998, Oxford

and

Paul Williams

BUDDHIST THOUGHT

are three surveys of Buddhism that would well repay the time spent with them.
These are very accessible survey of Buddhism from the Buddha to the
present. The scholarship in these books is state of the art, covering Buddhism
in terms of its history, doctrines and practices up the present time.
