Dear Pali community,

1. from 1977 on to 1982 the first twenty-eight chapter of Maha-thera
Balangoda Ananda-maitreya's "Pali grammar and composition for beginners"
were published in Pali Buddhist Review. In the mid-eighties, the manuscript
for the remaining chapters 29-34, plus the Appendix (verbal roots) and the
Pali-English glossary, were transmitted by Editor Russell Webb to my friend
Michel Henri Dufour (from Mâcon, France). Michel has just asked me if I was
interested to do something with it, which I am of course - e.g. making this
course available on the Web.

Now, I am presently with Michel in France, obviously I do not have access
to my own small library on Kangaroo Island, but it seems to me that someone
has already done this job, at least there is a typed version of the last
part of this opus, complete or partial. Could anyone provide information on
this matter please?

2. I am translating some puuja texts. One of these is the Padiipa-puuja,
the offering of Light, its first verse has been transmitted to me as

Ghana saarappa dittena
dîpena tama-da.msinâ

I understand:
ghano (adj.) = firm, solide, dense, uninterrupted (unité dans la
continuité) - e.g. ghana-tamo = thick darkness
instr. sing. masc. of ditto = p.p.p. dippati (to shine) = blazing, radiant
instr. sing. of diipo = light, lamp
tamo, tama.m = darkness, gloom

I do not understand:
saarappa = ? something like "all-including" ?
da.msinâ = ? something like "to destroy, to dissipate" ?

Could that mean:
"It shines uninterruptedly - unhindered,
this island of light which abolishes darkness - the gloom"

Thank you for helping.

Metta-cittena,

Dr Gabriel Jivasattha Bittar, Buddhayatana
