Dear Tzungkuen and Dhammafriends,
Looking up a word (in the PDF PED) which has
diacritics wont be possible with VRI transliterations.
If you use Str+F
you would have to make use of "MS Arial Unicode":thats
the font which the original PED was put into when they
published it online.
I usually look for words without diacritics with str+f
in all other cases i just skip through the file like a
normal book - but as there are quite a lot of pages
and many computers (not mine though) are not very fast
that wont be convenient either. However in my case it
is very satisfying.
A possible solution (and improvement) would be to
change all diacritics from the MS Arial Unicode PED
with the correlating diacritics of VRI Roman. I will
try to put such a "revised" version online in a few
days.
that would hopefully mean that you can simply "cut and
past" words from CSCD to the "find"-function of the
PDF reader.
Concerning the copyright and questions of ownership,
i.e. the second sila -
I am not part of the project of the university of
Chicago. But as the dictionary is available page-wise
online i just bundled their material for easier
lookup. I had a look at their copyright section there,
but nothing was mentioned which prohibited
making a copy of PED pages.
However this PDF version is neither for sell nor do i
have any ownership. It still belongs to the internet
community now that they made it public. And as the
reason for doing so was given recently (i.e. their
project of a reprint) i saw no harm in compiling a
e-book PED.
On the use of the PED. Truly, there are many mistakes
but everyone knows how old it is by now. As the
Critical Pali Dictionary is not yet finished and
difficult to get at, the PED is still the most useful
Pali English dictionary. And once you read several
nikayas with its help you will get a proper
understanding of pali words anyway.
The idea with a common translation made by a group of
experts is great and should really be taken up! Maybe
some would like to build a revised edition of the PED
in the same way - adding and explaining difficult
words...The internet allows such projects which
formerly were unthinkable. If they are taken up, much
the better so.
