Let me try to give a bit of amateur help:

ahudeva = ahu (aor.) + eva, "there was indeed"
eva is usually left untranslated here.

Earlier in the same paragraph, we have "Ahu kho so bhante samayo", "There was a time,
Venerable Sir..."
